2008 in Review

"Year In Review" Survery for 2008

1. What did you do in 2008 that you'd never done before?
-Go to a foreign country without my family or a family member
-Work in TV
-Take an aquarium trip with friends (I usually just go with the fam)
-Go to a birthday bash all over LA-- so much fun lolz!
-Move into an apartment
-Compete in a fashion show as a designer
-Sell stuff on Deviant Art
-Trick or treat as a non-child

2. Did you keep your New Year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year? I never make any.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth? Uh... not that I know of.

4. Did anyone close to you die? No, thank God.

5. What countries did you visit? Costa Rica, Hong Kong

6. What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008? More spiritual growth

7. What date(s) from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
November 4th- Election! First time I've ever voted! :D
October 9th- Leif Erikson day! And the Sherwood show.
October 1st- CSI episode with Maroon 5 airs...
September 25th- start of Fall qtr... Yeah, my memory sucksss... ALSO season premiere of The Office, first episode of a show I'm on ever, heh... ^^;
August 23rd- Meeting Melee at the Roxy to interview them
June 23rd- Xtina's Party
July 5th-19th Costa Rica

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year? This sounds really gay, but being on my favorite show ever, haha. There's probably something wayyy more important, but I'm working on it. :P

9. What was your biggest failure? Err... Not sure... Trying not to regret anything so... having to change one of my GEs to P/NP

10. Did you suffer illness or injury? Nothing too serious. Bruised tailbone. Super sore from skating. I got sick on the edge of the New Year though. :P

11. What was the best thing you bought? Lightsnake

12. Whose behavior merited celebration? Nothing really. :P

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed? Certain crazy people

14. Where did most of your money go? Presents and food. I did a little shopping this year too, but not much, as usual.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about? Any time there were breaks, weekends, etc... and anytime I got to work. Munnies. @_@

16. What song will always remind you of 2008? The Resistance - Anberlin

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
Wiser? A bit
Healthier? Ahah, good one.
Richer? Ever so slightly. But that will change...

18. What do you wish you'd done more of? Draw, but that's never going to change. Sleep-- I really don't think this "I'll sleep when I'm dead" thing is working out too well.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of? Sleep (but I needed it!!! How do I justify that?)

20. How will you be spending Christmas? I had an early Xmas this year. No church. It felt really, really weird. Spent Xmas eve on a plane and Xmas day not really doing much. Mostly TV watching while waiting for Daniel to start finishing college apps. >.< My least favorite Xmas as of yet.

22. Did you fall in love in 2008? Well, I did get a little conceited...

23. How many one-night stands? Haha, not here. Unless we're referring to trying to create study plans. >.<

24. What was your favorite TV program? The Office

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year? Aaaahhhhahah... sadly, yes. I've never had to dislike someone before. Very new to me.

26. What was the best book you read? Didn't really read. I don't get to read much out of free will. :P Mandatory reading has really killed it for me. I started The Witch of Portobello; it was good, but I didn't like it as much as The Alchemist. Something really useful I read was "Is Google Making Us Stupid?". Now I know why I don't read.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
TV discovery: Paul Simon (on The Colbert Report)
Live discovery: The Envy Corps, Pedestrian (before I knew who they were, I waited in line behind them to get food, haha), RX Bandits,
From friends: Innocence Mission, Circa Survive, Anthony Green, Explosions in the Sky, Phil Wickham, She & Him, Coconut Records

28. What did you want and get? GPA improvement (slight)

29. What did you want and not get? Answers to everything

30. What was your favorite film of this year? This year wasn't too great for films... Gonna go with Iron Man and The Dark Knight

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? 18, I studied for midterms like the party animal I am. My friends crashed my study party at midnight, thank God. Was the best study break ever, haha. That and the 2 hour break to play with Ventrilo.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008? Geez. Um, I'd definitely have to go with "I tried to wear whatever I had and tried to make it work". I bought more dresses though. :D

34. What kept you sane? Friends. Parents. Music. Church. Bible study. Don't know what I'd do without 'em.

35. Who did you miss? Katie- for being across the pond, Audrey- for being everywhere else but here,

36. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2008: I know I can get shot for this, but... though it can get you through some hard times, music isn't life. Also, 99% of your outlook is how you react to life.

37. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
No need to hide anything anymore
Can't return to who I was before

...Bitten by the ClosetBug...

Ask not what your clothes can do for you... ask what you can do for your clothes.

So today is very rainy and cold and wet. And I have had a bruised tailbone that I can't really sit on due to some broomballing rough-housing, haha. So, I decided to play dress up with my mom's 70's and 80's clothes!
This morning, I spent half the time perusing fashion blogs i.e. PainfullyHip.com and a smaller one called Pearls in Your Hair. Yes, I was inspired. And the fact that I live with a fashionista all throughout the school year helps. :) She's amazing (http://closetbug.blogspot.com). I'll probably never do anything like this again as I leave fashion blogging to the talented and clothfully-artistic like her. I just wanted to give these fossils of clothing the sunlight they deserve every century or so.

A little naval looking dress, from Talbots, I think... My mom still fits this, so I'm not stealing it, lolz.

Not sure where this was from... I think Talbots again, but very puffy shoulder pads (most/all of these have shoulder pads actually.)

Lacey jacket type shirt with lotsa shiny sequins on the lapels that I don't really love. :P It looks really naked though if I fold in the lapels. >.< Booo...
Plus a cute floral piano-teacher-esque skirt. It looks oldish, but "the old lady" look is "in", I'll have you know...

Also from Talbots, came with a belt, but couldn't find it, so I just threw on another one. Very snug around the tuchus. >_< My mom is a tiny lady and has a significantly smaller hip size.

That skirt again, don't know why my mom doesn't wear it!!! Matched with a cute baby-pink sweater made of ribbons. It's from Japan, actually, and I don't know which store, but it's old. And cute. >w<
This outfit is also cute tucked in, but I feel it's a little less pretentious hanging out, haha. I'm not particularly pretentious today, probably thanks to my binge of Backstreet Boys' Millenium listening. No one has to know...

Again, LOVE this Japanese sweater! Matched it with some high waisted shorts I bought at Loehmann's and some CVS tights. I bought the shorts for my Clockwork Orange Halloween costume actually, haha. (One of my sub-plans in this dress up venture was to try to revive not only my mother's closet, but my ex-H-ween costume pieces that have been excommunicated in my closet). This also looks pretty good with boots; I wore some Steve Madden cow boy-ish frill suede boots (got them 60% at Loehmann's) with them one day. I was fairly proud of myself from straying from the norm.

The piano-teacher skirt returns with another ex-H-ween costume piece from a pirate outfit. It's got a fluffy ribbon to make a bow and puffy sleeves. :D This is almost like the full piano-teacher outfit. (Ugh, considering my piano teacher didn't like me much.)

Same outfit with a cool tweed jacket my mom has (not old); I'm trying to convince her to wear all the cool clothes she has with her new stuff...

Yeah, so that was a nice jump from being me... I feel like I haven't played dress up in forever! I *have* been perusing thrift and resale shops (which are significantly more interesting than normal stores... cheaper too) with my ClosetBug friend, as she teaches me to be less fashion/hipster-ignorant and a bit more open-minded about clothes... (Apparently, people wear other things than jeans and t-shirts... Who knew?!)

To those of you whose parents still have all their old clothes-- guys and dolls-- ask them to bust it out for you! You never know what you may find. ;) I also really encourage the recycling of clothes! Let's reduce our carbon footprints! Buy old stuff and donate your unwanteds; they may end up anywhere from my closet to Tanzania where they are-- believe it or not-- wanted and/or needed!

Nothing like a wet kiss and a wagging tail...

IMG_0498

So I'm finally home. I think it's been the longest I've been away from home as of yet. And it's only been a month, in reality. Feels like longer... I'm going to ramble.

Anyways, I've decided I'll ALWAYS want to have a dog. For the rest of my life. There's nothing like coming home and seeing the most ecstatic joy coming out of one unit of a being. If you've never had a dog or played with one, I'll have to tell you: imagine a friend whose face lights up like Christmas when you're around. Throw in some unconditional love to go with it. Pretty amazing. You'll never feel unwelcome again. :) If judging is your thing, dogs won't do it! That's what's awesome. You can feel like the biggest pile of steaming crap, but it won't make a difference to them: they'll love you all the same and show it.

More randomness... I've been feeling like a walking kiosk lately. All these foreigners have been coming up to talk to me. Not a bad thing, but I've been noticing a trend. I've got France, Germany (maybe Austria), and Russia crossed off the list within the past week or so. Neat. And I'm not complaining because they've all been guys, lolz!

I'm just exhilarated to be home right now; can't really compile a train of thought to write anything significant-- OOH, I'll do Roses and Thorns! Something I did with my volunteer group all last year.

Roses: Something good in your life that happened today
1. Got an A on my paper on The Colbert Report
2. I'm home
3. I got to see my puppy :3
4. Had an awesome time watching 24 with my fam
5. Had a nice and smooth trip home on the train

Thorns: Things not so good that happened today
1. Chinese lecture was SUPER long. Excruciating really. :P
2. I didn't finish my paper like I planned to (before break)
3. There's too much that I want to do and so little time! TT_TT

Buds: Things that you're looking forward to
1. Thanksgiving! Stoaked for it! You have no idea...
2. Black Friday - self explanatory (according to the Russian I talked to, I shop too much; or at least I talk about it too much)
3. Seeing BFFs :)
4. Home cooked food and non-campus food
5. New season of 24
6. Christmas is coming!
7. Quarter's almost over!

Now I tag YOU. Yes, if you're reading this, I tag you. :3 Go do it!!! It's even more awesome if you make it a daily journal thing; gets you thinking, you know?

I think I'm gonna be doing more little things like this in the future. These little I-did-it-so-you-do-it things. :) Hopefully someone will get a kick out of it!

Love is not a feeling...

Two people from an organization I was in last year just got back from Uganda. They were working with the people who had suffered from the traumas of a 2 decade long war there and the both of them had absolutely amazing experiences. Because I'm a bit envious, I'm surprised that I'm more happy for them than anything. For anyone to experience emotions and boundary-pushing like that just makes me a fan. I feel like that's what I want too, to be tossed into such an alien environment and just spend time with people, loving them, talking to them, sharing life with them, even if it eventually amounts to a miniscule experience. Whatever impact, I want to make one.

And now I think, sitting here at my desk, that it's the same ANYWHERE. Whether you're in Uganda, the UK, Cambodia, India, Italy, the U.S.-- you can have that experience. It's just a matter of how much you are willing to put into it. "Love is not a feeling, it's an ability."

Brings me to another subject: tattoos. I for one am not into permanently marking myself, but if I were to get one for the sake of it, I think that would be the quote. It's something I need to constantly be reminded of each and every minute, secular or spiritual. Though it seems so simple, that quote says so much. It explains why you need to treat each and every person with the utmost compassion, regardless of your relationship to them. It explains why you need to understand the way things are sometimes, though you may not endorse it. It explains why you should go an extra mile to do something nice. It explains why you need to take care of yourself: your mind, body, and soul. I believe it's true. To love is the hardest thing to do consistently.
